Sunday SchoolSunday School begins Sept. 9. Sunday school classes meet from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. in various classrooms throughout the church building. Nursery care is provided during Sunday school hour. Join us! New members are always welcome to join any Sunday school class. If you plan to bring your child to a class for the first time, you are welcome to stay in class for a while to make sure your child is comfortable. If you are an adult ready to join a class, do not worry about starting midyear. You can start at any time -- just stop near the kitchen for a cup of tea or coffee and and someone will direct you to the classroom. Youth, grades K - 12Our preschool and Kindergarten class, for children 3 years old through Kindergarten, centers on stories from the Old and New Testaments. The children sing songs, listen to a story, do a craft, and take home a story card each week. Our first- and second-grade class members also sing songs and do crafts each week. These children are learning to read, so their class time includes both hearing and reading stories from the Bible. Our third- through fifth-grade class members class sing songs, play games, and read stories from the Bible. They also work on activities and projects related to their lessons each week. They are starting to think about how to live as children of God. Our middle-school class is for children in grades six through eight. This year their lessons focus on the church and God’s kingdom. They read scripture, dramatize ideas from the lessons, write responses to the scripture readings, and participate in other group learning activities. For preschoolers through eighth-graders, we are using Sunday school curriculum materials called Walk with Me, published by Faith Alive Resources (for more information about these materials, please visit www.faithaliveresources.com. Our high-school class is taking a road trip through the Bible this fall, using a book called Route 66 (there are 66 books in the Bible), also published by Faith Alive Resources. This course is an overview of the entire Bible, pulling together all the various stories and ideas the teenagers have learned as they were growing up. Adult Bible Study (English)All adults are welcome and encouraged to attend and participate. The ages of the participants range from 20 years old to senior citizens. Each person has a facinating point of view. Generally, we learn from the scripture and each other. The group size is about 10, so there is plenty of time and space for each person to share their thoughts, insights and feelings. The group is very supportive of varying points of view so we can learn from each other's experiences. Every week we read a scripture passage and ask the following questions: Who is the author writing to? Is the author asking me to see or do something differently than I would normally do? The teacher basically moderates the discussion. The group is currently reading the words of Jesus recorded in the Gospel of Matthew. We are discussing what Jesus is saying and how this is different than our normal way of thinking. The discussion is open, everyone is encouraged to participate. No topic is off limits. The group decides what we will study next. Cambodian Bible Study (Adult, Khmer)Adult Bible Study in Khmer meets to pray together and discuss basic Christian doctrine. Eliot Church is proud of the fact that the leader of this class is a Cambodian who recently finished seminary and passed his examinations. Women's Association Bible StudyThe Women's Association circle meeting is the second Tuesday of each month.,except July and August, weather permitting. The Bible ExperienceThis small-group experience in sprititual formation meets Tuesday evenings from 7:30 - 9:00PM. We are working our way through the series Companions with Christ. We are learning through experiences how to pray and listen to God. We are learning to listen to each other. We are learning to pray with and for each other. The evening begins with candles being lit and singing "Holy Holy Holy" along with John Tesh's CD. Then the group members share how they have felt God's touch during the previous week. T he lesson of the week is discussed and amplified with an exercise and practice. Usually, we practice a form of prayer each week. Together, we have grown as individuals and as a group. We welcome new members who want to grow in their faith and faith experiences. |
